New Jersey Asbestos Lawyer
Asbestos is a class of minerals that naturally occur in the earth. They are fibrous silicate materials that are fire- and chemical-resistant. The durable and resistant properties of asbestos led to manufacturers using billions of tons of asbestos in fabrics and building materials in the 1900s. Unfortunately, asbestos exposure is extremely dangerous, posing a risk of life-threatening diseases and cancers. If a doctor has diagnosed you with asbestos disease, discuss your rights with a New Jersey asbestos lawyer. There is a good chance you could be eligible for compensation for asbestos exposure.

What Is Asbestos Disease?
Not all people who encounter asbestos will develop diseases. Many, however, may ingest the microscopic particles and eventually develop asbestos-induced diseases, illnesses, and cancers – often 10 to 30 years after initial exposure. Particles of asbestos can cling to the inner linings of the organs and cause several illnesses over time. Some of the most common asbestos-related diseases our New Jersey asbestos lawyers have seen are:
- Mesothelioma is an aggressive form of cancer that stems from asbestos exposure. It can develop in the mesothelium, or the thin outer lining, of the lungs, heart, stomach, or testicles. Each form of mesothelioma comes with different symptoms and outlooks for recovery.
- Lung cancer. Asbestos-related malignant lung cancer is most common in workers or others who faced long-term exposure to asbestos. People who smoke have an increased risk of developing asbestos lung cancer. Asbestos lung cancer has a high mortality rate, claiming over 150,000 lives in 2017. This is a type of lung disease that stems from inhaling asbestos particles. The particles lodge in the lungs, causing severe fibrosis, shortness of breath, and tissue scarring. Asbestosis comes with a high risk of developing pleural mesothelioma, or mesothelioma of the lungs.
- Colon cancer. Asbestos colon cancer can develop in men or women who worked around asbestos for long periods. Workers may ingest asbestos particles through the esophagus, where they can cling to the walls of the intestine, cause inflammation, and eventually result in malignant cellular mutations.
Plaque buildup, effusions (fluid buildup), scar tissue, and inflammation of the lungs can all result from contact with asbestos. Asbestos exposure can cause a wide range of illnesses, diseases, and health complications – most of which come with a poor prognosis for long-term survival. There is currently no cure for asbestos-related diseases, although treatments are available to help relieve symptoms and extend lifespan.
Why Should You Talk to a New Jersey Asbestos Attorney?
Occupational exposure to asbestos is the main cause of asbestos diseases. If you worked with or around construction materials prior to 1978, you were a first responder in the 9/11 terrorist attack, or you work in construction on older buildings today and have been diagnosed with an asbestos disease, you could have a claim against your employer. Numerous asbestos trusts exist to help pay for victims’ damages if a defendant is bankrupt or out of business.
It’s always worthwhile to consult a New Jersey mesothelioma lawyer experienced in asbestos claims to discover if you have the right to file a lawsuit. Asbestos exposure is a significant health hazard that an employer, landlord, product manufacturer, and other parties should have prevented. You could be eligible for payment of your medical bills, lost wages, the lost capacity to earn, lost quality of life, and pain and suffering in New Jersey. At Meirowitz & Wasserberg, LLP, we offer free initial consultations, so there’s no risk in asking a New Jersey personal injury attorney about your asbestos disease claim.
