In 2001, the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) issued a statement that metal-on-metal hip implants needed post-market research to better determine if they were safe. One year later, they announced that research showed very little reason for medical professionals to continue using metal on metal implants due to the failure rate. And finally, in 2013, the FDA offered an official Safety Communication: “Metal-on-metal hip implants have unique risks in addition to the general risks of all hip implants.”

But even though the medical community has halted to use of metal-on-metal implants, thousands of patients are still living with the implants and thousands more have already had an implant fail.

These implants come from a variety of manufacturers, including:

  • DePuy
  • Stryker
  • Biomet
  • Wright Medical
  • Smith and Nephew
  • Zimmer

At Meirowitz & Wasserberg, LLP, we are dedicated to helping patients with defective hip replacements make certain that they get the medical care and legal justice they need. If you or a loved one has been harmed by a hip implant, contact our New York City hip implant attorneys today.

Complications And Consequences Of A Defective Hip Implant

Very simply, metal-on-metal implants are a design flaw. Not only can the implants cause general pain and sudden dislocation, but the constant metal against metal rubbing can also create tiny particles of metal that are released into the body.

Just a selection of the complications from defective hip implants include:

  • Stiffness and loss of range of motion (hip impingement)
  • Inflammation
  • Bone fractures
  • Metal poisoning
  • Nerve damage
  • Tissue damage
  • Kidney and thyroid damage
  • Infection
  • Inflammation
  • Hip dislocation
  • Hip failure

The consequences of a defective hip replacement can be painful, expensive and traumatic. In many cases, patients go months or years without know what is causing their complications before realizing that they have to have another invasive hip replacement surgery. Even then, they have suffered long-term or permanent damage from their metal-on-metal hip.

Some of the serious consequences of hip implant complications include:

  • Pain
  • Repeat surgery
  • Reduced mobility
  • Permanent nerve damage
  • Lowered quality of life

Meirowitz & Wasserberg, LLP | Hip Implant Lawyer

Why would you file a defective medical device lawsuit against the manufacturer of your hip implant? There are four big reasons:

  • To get the financial compensation you need to pay the bills caused by the implant
  • To get financial compensation for the pain and suffering you endured
  • To make sure that others aren’t subjected to similar implants in the future
  • To get justice and punish the manufacturer for their negligence
