New York Power Morcellators Attorney
A power morcellator is a medical device that physicians use during minimally invasive, or laparoscopic, surgeries. The most common procedures that involve the use of this device are the removal of uterine fibroids and during hysterectomies. Unfortunately, there have been accounts of power morcellators spreading and increasing cancer in women who have undiagnosed uterine cancer. If this sounds like your situation, come speak with a New York City power morcellator lawyer at Meirowitz & Wasserberg, LLP, as soon as possible.

Power Morcellators And Uterine Cancer
Power morcellators are devices that divide tissues into smaller fragments for removal through small incision sites. They are common for use in minimally invasive myomectomy and hysterectomy procedures, as they can reduce scarring and recovery time in women. In 2014, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a “safety communication” to health care providers and women with symptomatic uterine fibroids considering laparoscopic surgeries.
This announcement came after women came forward with allegations that the power morcellator spread undiagnosed cancerous tissues throughout and beyond the uterus, worsening the condition. The movement of the morcellator’s blade during this procedure can spread tissues around the uterus and surrounding area. In women who do not have uterine cancer, this isn’t an issue. If a woman has undiagnosed cancer, however, this spreading of tissues can also spread cancer.
Uterine cancers are very difficult to diagnose, as they typically do not cause any symptoms until they have progressed past a certain stage. There is currently no reliable method for testing whether a woman with uterine fibroids or leiomyomas, has uterine cancer. For this reason, the FDA advises women to consider alternative methods of fibroid removal.
Mass Torts For Power Morcellators In NYC
After accidental morcellation of cancer tissues, the typical survival time for the patient is just two to three years. Without morcellation, the same patient would have been four times less likely to die from uterine sarcoma. Failure to warn of this potential risk has led dozens of women to suffer worsened cancer and increased risk of mortality. A proper warning label on power morcellators could have prevented these harms.
Hundreds of women are involved in class action lawsuits against the manufacturers of power morcellators for failing to include warnings of the risk of spreading cancer on product labels. These manufacturers include Johnson & Johnson, Blue Endo, Cook Urological, Inc., Lumenis, Ltd., and Olympus America Inc. Johnson & Johnson suspended the sale of its power morcellators shortly after the FDA’s release, but it has not pulled these items from the shelves. A 2015 FBI investigation of the manufacturer concluded that Johnson & Johnson knew of the cancer-related risks prior to suspending the sale of the morcellators.
Women who have suffered adverse outcomes after power morcellation because of undiagnosed uterine cancer have the right to join an ongoing mass tort against the product manufacturer. There are many morcellator lawsuits against the Johnson & Johnson Ethicon power morcellator, along with other suits for morcellators from other manufacturers. Work with a product liability attorney with experience in mass torts for your chance at compensation for worsened cancer or wrongful death.
