In 2014, German drug manufacturer Boehringer Ingelheim agreed to pay out a $650 million settlement to 4,000 families who had been adversely affected by their anticoagulant drug, Pradaxa.
The settlement came after thousands of patients, doctors, and medical professionals reported that the relatively new blood thinner was causing life-threatening bleeding in some patients that could not be stopped via traditional treatments. During the case, defective drug attorneys argued that the pharmaceutical company misled consumers in their marketing messages by stating that their drug was a better and safer alternative to the older blood thinner, warfarin.
Among the evidence in the case was documentation that Boehringer Ingelheim tried to revise or even destroy proof that Pradaxa patients’ blood should be monitored.

Pradaxa Dangers, Compared To Warfarin
Pradaxa, also known by its generic name, Dabigatran, is part of a new generation of blood thinners that were marketed as a significant improvement over the traditionally used warfarin. Approved by the Food & Drug Administration in 2010, Boehringer Ingelheim claimed that the drug could be useful at the same dosage with all patients and that patients did not need to have their diet or blood monitored while they took the medication.
Boehringer Ingelheim did not stress the drug’s side effects, which include stomach and brain bleeding, or the fact that the drug did not have an antidote as warfarin did.
The Institute for Safe Medication Practices reported that by 2014, the drug had caused 1,000 deaths among the 850,000 people who took it.
Although an antidote, Idarucizumab, was approved for use in 2015, doctors and patients continue to be misled by the company concerning the drug’s advantages and the drug’s serious and sometimes deadly side effects.
